Bioinformatics and Information Science Center
Mission Statement and Goals

The mission of the Bioinformatics and Information Science Center at WKU is to build and maintain an interdisciplinary community, with student engagement, that will collaboratively propose and solve problems in bioinformatics and information science.

As part of its mission, BISC will develop goals and procedures to:

  1. Advance bioinformatics and information science at WKU by bringing together members of the research community who are interested in informatics.
  2. Advance learning by engaging students in experiences that combine technical skills, scientific integrity, collaboration, and real-world opportunities.
  3. Develop a support network for bioinformatics and information research and projects through collaboration and consulting.
  4. Build a strong interdisciplinary curriculum that will prepare students to compete in an expanding world of information science, enter the informatics workforce, and excel in graduate informatics programs.
  5. Help members compete for external funding through grants, contracts, and endowments; and to present and publish their results in appropriate venues.

Faculty and staff from all disciplines are invited to join BISC as a full or an associate member. As a full member, faculty will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of policies to fulfill the mission of the center, participate in consulting, mentor students in applied research, and help build a cross-disciplinary curriculum in bioinformatics and information science. As an associate member, faculty will be able to establish collaborations with BISC members and are encouraged to support the mission of the center in any way that they can.

BISC Now Has a Blackboard Account!

All BISC members have a Blackboard account for BISC. This will provide a secure electronic forum in which to communicate and exchange information, discussions, and post messages to committees, and perform much of the work of the Center. You can log onto the BISC site by going to http://ecourses.wku.edu/ and logging in with your university email name and password. Each member has been given TA privileges so that you can use many of the tools found in the menu.

Look for Committee discussions and initiatives within the next few weeks to appear on the BISC Blackboard site.

BISC Becomes Member of Advanced Research and Technology Program, ARTP.

BISC is now a member of the Advanced Research and Technology Program, ARTP. The ARTP is funded by an initiative of Kentucky's Council on Higher Education for Programs of Distinction (PODs). Through the ARTP BISC has received funding to hire students to assist in the support of BISC projects. Members are encouraged to establish collaborations and request student support from BISC. (The BISC site on Blackboard can be used to develop project areas for exchange of information.) Since ARTP must account for its funding, ARTPs support to BISC requires that BISC members report BISC related activities each quarter. Each quarter we will send out a summary sheet of the years activities to which you can add your BISC related activities. Having just completed such a report for the Biotechnology Center during July, it is exciting to see the summary of all of the activities that goes on in one of these ARTP centers. I hope that the collaborative activities within BISC will grow and that as members we will actively seek to further the mission of BISC by supporting its goals.

BISC Welcomes New Members!

One faculty member has requested membership and has been approved by a majority of the current membership. Please welcome:
Jonathan Quiton - Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics.
Dr. Quiton has expertise in statistics and has an interest in establishing a statistical gateway to support research. You can view all summaries here.

BISC Call for Committee Members

Dear BISC members, please review the following committees and send an email to Claire Rinehart if you are able to serve on one of the committees below. If you wish to see who has signed up for the different committees go to committees.
