An Enzyme is a protein that catalyzes, or speeds up, a chemical reaction.
An enzyme, like any catalyst, remains unaltered by the reaction and can
therefore continue to function, performing the same reaction over and over
again.
(Click the Red Button) Enzymes
can work together in a specific order, creating metabolic pathways.
In a metabolic pathway, one enzyme takes
the product of another enzyme as a substrate. After the reaction, the
product is then passed on to another enzyme. In this animation, the Enzymes
(Yellow, Green, and Purple) combine (Anabolic) the substrates to form
a “Final Product”. Click the Red Button again to see that
just a few enzymes can create large amounts of the product. |
