Course Description:

This course is an introduction to human anatomy and physiology. Along with the accompanying laboratory, its aim is to examine the structure and function of the human body and to gain an appreciation for the relationship between form and function. We will take a systems approach, studying each of the body's organ systems. For more in depth information you may want to elect: BIOL 231, Advanced Human Anatomy and Physiology; BIOL 321, Comparative Anatomy: and/or BIOL 330, Animal Physiology.

Required Text:

Tortora, G.J. and S.R. Grabowski. Principles of Anatomy and Physiology 8th Edition.

Course Examinations and Grading:

Three one hour exams will be given in class during the course of the semester. The format will be multiple choice, matching, short answer, and short essay. There will be a fourth hour examination given in the final exam period. Examinations will cover material from lecture exclusively. Reading assignments in the textbook are designed to improve your understanding and provide additional information.
Each unit exam is worth 15%. The final is also worth 15% for a total of 60% of your final grade. Laboratory grades will be submitted to me by your instructor and will constitute 40% of your final grade in BIOL 131. Grades are assigned based on a 10 point straight scale, i.e. 90-100 = A, 80-89 = B: etc.
All students are expected to take each exam at the scheduled time. A make up exam due to illness will be given only if a note from a physician is provided. The student must contact the instructor in advance of the exam to be eligable for a make-up.
Grading disputes will be submitted in writing within 1 week of the return of the exam and must include a scientific explanation of why your answer is correct.
