 Course Objectives:

This course explores the phylogenetic relationships of the major protozoan and metazoan taxa with emphasis on systems that have evolved to maintain organismal and population homeostasis. Its aim is to examine the general principles by which animals function.  Once introduced, students will be expected to be able to apply these insights to understanding animal distributions and function in all major habitat types.  Students desiring a more in-depth treatment of specific topics in zoology should consider BIOL 330 (Animal Physiology), BIOL 321 (Comparative Anatomy), BIOL 324 (Histology), BIOL 326 (Ornithology), BIOL 456 (Ichthyology), BIOL 459 (Mammology), or BIOL 466 (Animal Behavior). Course pre-requisites include: BIOL 120 and 121.  Co-requisite: BIOL 225.

Required Text:

Hickman, Roberts, Larson and I'Anson.  Integrated Principles of Zoology. 12th Edition. 2004.  McGraw-Hill.  ISBN 0-07-243940-8.

Course Examinations and Grading:

Three one hour exams will be given in class during the course of the semester. The format will be multiple choice, short answer, and short essay. There will be a two hour final exam, approximately half of which will cover new material and the other half will be comprehensive. Examinations will cover material from lecture exclusively. Reading assignments in the textbook are designed to improve your understanding and provide additional information. Reading of the text is strongly recommended.
Each unit exam is worth 20% of grade. The 2 hour final is worth 40%. Grades are assigned based on a 10 point straight scale, i.e. 90-100 = A, 80-89 = B: etc.
All students are expected to take each exam at the scheduled time. A make up exam due to illness will be given only if a note from a physician is provided. The student must contact the instructor in advance of the exam.
Grading disputes will be submitted in writing within 1 week of the return of the exam and must include a scientific explanation of why your answer is correct.

Note to Disabled Students:  Students with disabilities who require accommodations (academic adjustments and/or auxiliary aids or services) for this course must contact the Office for Student Disability Services, Room 445, Potter Hall. The OFSDS telephone number is (270) 745-5004 V/TDD.
Note on Cell Phones: The ringing of cell phones in class is rude and disruptive.  Turn off phones before entering class.  An "accidental" call will receive a warning.  The second time, I will deduct 5 points from the offending students previous test.
