there were 42,315 applicants for 17,759 seats in allopathic medical

If you are a
Kentucky resident, you should consider yourself fortunate. In the
Commonwealth, there are two publicly financed medical colleges, one at
the University of Louisville and the other at the University of Kentucky.
Combined, the two colleges have approximately 260 students in their first
year classes and Kentucky residents make up approx. 80% of the first
year classes. For fall 2007, 411 Kentucky residents applied to U-L, 276
were interviewed and 119 matriculated. 424 applied to U-K, 241 were interviewed
and 77 matriculated. Assuming that most of the students applied to both
schools, the overall acceptance rate was a little under 50%. In addition,
Kentucky also has a School of Osteopathic Medicine at Pikeville College,
with a class of 75 students, a little more than half of which are from Kentucky.
If you are a
resident of Tennessee, you are also blessed with two publicly financed
medical colleges, one at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City,
and the other at the University of Tennessee (Memphis). The state
funded schools in Tennessee combined have a first year class of approximately
210 students and take approx. 90% Tennessee residents (196/210 in 2007).
In addition, there are also two private medical colleges in Tennessee at
Vanderbilt University in Nashville and Meharry Medical College in Nashville.
