CLIENTELE: This course is designed to fulfill 1 h credit which is required for majors in the Department of Biology. This course for Biology majors can be selected as one of the following five courses: 309-310, 315, 327, 430 or 446.

OBJECTIVES: To introduce and provide experience with some some fundamental laboratory techniques necessary for the study of microbes.

LAB MANUAL: All students are required to purchase a new laboratory manual. Use of previously used lab manuals is not permitted.

ATTENDANCE: Every laboratory period must be attended punctually and entirely (See section on GRADING).

EXAMS: Three exams will be given. Exam I (50 points) will be given during the first hour of period 5 and will cover material from labs 1-4. Exam II (50 points) will be given the first hour of or prior to period 9 and will cover material from labs 5-7. Exam III (100 points) will be given during Period 15 and cover material from labs 8-13 Exams II and III Review. http://bioweb.wku.edu/faculty/Clauson

GRADING: Each student's Term Letter Grade (TLG) will be determined by the scores earned on the three exams (200 total points) plus credit for each of 12 laboratory periods in which each student is required to complete and record exercise data. The instructor reserves the right to randomly request your laboratory data pages to assure their completion and evaluate performance. Five (5) points will be earned after completing each laboratory period and recording data from that period in your laboratory manual. These points will be summed to obtain a Cumulative Score.

The maximum number of points awarded will be 200 (test scores) + 60 (12 completed laboratories)=260

Basis for assigning each TLG
234 points A
208 points B
182 points C
156 points D
Below 156 F

Prerequisites: Biology 120/121 and 220. The lab should be taken concurrently with the lecture.

Special Assignments: There will be no special presentations for this course other than those listed above.

Course objective: The purpose of this course is to provide the student with basic laboratory skills which is correlated with Bacteriology 309. The course is designed to fulfill 1 our credit which is required for Medical Technology majors and may count toward the biology major.

DISABILITIES: "Students with disabilities who require accommodations (academic adjustments and/or auxiliary aids or services) for this course must contact the Office for Student Disability Services, Room 445, Potter Hall. The OFSDS telephone number is (270) 745-5004 V/TDD. Please DO NOT request accommodations directly from the professor or instructor without a letter of accommodation from the Office for Student Disability Services".
