Individual 25 minute Presentations: Oral presentation and group discussion of an article selected from a biological science journal (issue of 1991 or later) in WKU’s Science Library holdings. The article that you select for your presentation must be approved in advance by me! Photocopy of the article upon which presentation is to be based must be submitted to me – place in my mailbox in the Department of Biology Office – NO LATER than the Tuesday before the week of your presentation is scheduled. You will be expected to utilize in an effective manner clear, well-prepared overhead transparencies, poster(s), and/or handouts to facilitate your 10 and 25 minute presentations. Additional Assignment: You will be expected to attend at least three (3) Department of Biology Seminars (Friday, 2:15-3:15 PM, TCNW-224) during the course of the semester. Be sure to sign the sheet at seminar so I can count you present. Failure to attend seminars will reduce your final grade by one letter grade. Attendance and Grading: Since this class meets only once per week, it is imperative that you attend. Your final grade will be reduced by one letter grade for each unexcused absence. Your final course grade will be based largely upon the quality of your 10 and 25 minute presentations, the improvement you demonstrate, if any, from your 10 minute to your 25 minute presentation, your response to questions posed by your peers in the class and the questions, if any, that you pose to your peers when they give their presentations. Your final course grade will be determined on a relative scale – i.e. relative to the best performance(s) of your peers. In other words, you will be judged in accordance with how well others do in class. Generally, in a seminar course, I assume that you will do “B” level work. You may demonstrate that you can perform at a higher level, i.e. “A”, or you may demonstrate that you perform at a lower level, i.e. “C” or lower. March 2 is the last day to drop a course with a “W”.
