Research
Interests:
Lab Based - My graduate research focused on the effects on plant growth
regulators (specifically cytokinins) on gene expression in bean plants
(Phaseolus vulgaris and Glycine max L.). We identified a novel gene
that showed differential expression with exposure to cytokinins.
We extended this to study phenotypic effects on the plants in the
field.
Educational
Research - Currently, my focus has shifted from a laboratory
concentration to an interest in science education. I have a strong
desire to improve Science Education for children in elementary
school through high school.
I am presently
serving or have served as a:
· Content Area Program Reviewer for the Kentucky Department of Education,
Frankfort, Kentucky
· Science Academy Science Content Specialist through GRECC (Green River
Educational Cooperative): Engaging, Inquiring Connecting- Integrating Science
and Technology
· Science Alliance Member: Ogden College Committee for improving P-12
education.
· Teacher for Super Saturdays to Gifted Elementary School Children.
· Researcher on the Ogden College Committee to Align the curriculum of
the Biology Department to the Kentucky Core Contents taught by High School teachers.
· Science Specialist, developer and curator of the Hands-On lab at W.R.
McNeill Elementary. This involves setting the lab up on a weekly basis, mentoring
teachers and developing Content Based labs that are appropriate for multiple
aged children. I am currently writing a Hand-On lab manual that is used with
this lab.
· University Committee Member of KTIP (Kentucky Teacher Internship Program
for first year teachers.
· Science Specialist for Teachers seeking National Board Certification.
I have worked with individual teachers and led a workshop for teachers in multiple
states seeking National Board certification.
-Medical Technology
In addition to my interest in improving Science Education, I also have
an interest in Health Care, specifically the field of Medical Technology.
I am the advisor for students interested in a Career in Medical Technology
as well as the advisor for the Med Tech Club that engages students
in many ways. I coordinate the placing of Medical Technology Students
into rural hospitals so that they can gain clinical experience before
applying to Schools of Medical Technology (AHES).
