-  La Selva  -

La Selva

   -is wet (4m rain/yr)
   -is warm (24°C avg)

But it is not your typical rainforest.  There are many gaps in the canopy.

Soil and location conditions are not ideal at La Selva, so in storms, tree falls are frequent.

Forests on better soils have been replaced by banana plantations.

Large buttresses are present on many trees, but they can still blow over. (Bill for size).

The second-growth swamp where trees were measured
for Hunter's "flying" frog project.   (Sergio is measuring
tree height).

Tink frog at night-- easy to hear but hard to spot.  In the lower picture,
the frog has flattened itself to become even less conspicuous

Bugs and flowers were always amazing.  Note the translucent "windows" in the moth (actually from Puerto Humo).
