1.    a.)    Calculate the number of moles of ATP produced by the complete aerobic metabolism of 3 moles of glucose.

       b.)    How many moles of O2 were consumed?

        c.)    Calculate the number of moles of ATP produced if the metabolism was anaerobic

        d.)    Recalculate a, b, and c if 3 moles of a C16 fatty acid were used as substrate.

        e.)    Brain Masochism:  After a whale surfaces following a prolonged dive, it begins breathing air and 20 moles of        lactate are consumed in aerobic metabolism each minute for a total of 5 minutes.  How many moles of ATP were produced from the complete oxidation of lactate during this period of time ?
 

2.    In a ten minute experiment measuring gas exchange, a 17 g mouse consumed 4.8 ml of oxygen and produced 3.89 ml carbon dioxide (both volumes corrected to standard temperature and pressure).
