The objective of this course is to provide the student with a basic foundation in pathogenic microbiology.  It is a course that studies organisms causing disease with emphasis on bacteria.  The course will survey pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa.  This course is designed to fulfill 4-hrs credit toward category D-I (Natural Sciences) of the General Education Requirement.  For graduate students this course fulfills 400 level G credit.

Prerequisites:  Biology 309-310 or consent of instructor.

Attendance Policy:  Daily class participation and attendance are reflected in the   grade.

Since graduate students are enrolled in this course (470G), they will be given additional assignments not required for undergraduates such as an oral report.  The supplemental graduate student requirements will represent 10% of the final grade with the final examination representing 23% rather than 33%.  Sign up early for your topics, as this constitutes part of the grade.

The tentative schedule for tests is listed under #6.  The examinations will be either acceptable or unacceptable, matching, fill-in-the blank, multiple choice, or discussion,  or a combination of the above.  Makeup examinations will require a doctor's excuse.  Final examination will be given as published in the University Class Schedule.

Textbook - Introduction to Microbiology for the Health Sciences by M.M. Jensen, D.N. Wright and R. A. Robinson-4th Ed., 1997.

Grading:  The lecture will constitute 2/3 of your final grade.  This value is obtained by your performance on three examinations (100 points each).  The examinations will be based on material covered in lecture periods and from assigned reading.  The final exam will not be comprehensive.  Laboratory will constitute 1/3 of your final grade and a statement of this grading will be handed out in laboratory.  Final course grades will be assigned according to the following scale:  A = 90-100%, B = 80-89%; C = 70-79%; D = 60-69%; F = 0-59%.  The final is Tuesday, December 11, at 3:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.

The period at which a student may still withdraw from a class with a grade of "W" is six weeks after the beginning of the semester.  This semester the date is October 5, 2001.
