Barking Treefrog (Hyla
gratiosa)
The Barking Treefrog, Hyla gratiosa is the
largest treefrog found in the state, measuring 2 and a half to 3 inches
in length. This spectacular frog is equally as colorful as the Green
Treefrog. The Barking Treefrog is only found in the part of the Pennyrile
known as the western Karst Plains. Males call while floating at the
surface of ponds or flooded agricultural fields. Most breeding ponds
are located in open grassy areas. The call, as its name implies,
is a barking "doonk" sound repeated 9 or 10 times at 1-2 second intervals.
In Kentucky, the whereabouts of adults outside the breeding season is unknown.
These secretive creatures usually breed during a brief 2-4 week period
between May to July when the weather conditions are just right.
