Bird-voiced Treefrog
(Hyla avivoca)
Similar in appearance to the gray treefrog, but with a greenish
wash rather than a yellow color along the inner thigh, is the bird-voiced
treefrog, Hyla avivoca. This small frog is 1 and a
half to 2 inches in length and is found only in the undisturbed tupelo
and cypress swamps in the western portion of Kentucky. Its high-pitched
bird-like whistling song is produced from perches in trees and shrubs within
the swamps of the western coalfields and the Jackson Purchase.
