Undergrad Research Opportunities
  • 2010 Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity at Harvard University
    The WKU Ogden College of Science and Engineering  is pleased to offer a summer undergraduate research opportunity in Dr. Johnathan Whetstine's laboratory at Harvard University (http://www.hms.harvard.edu/dms/bbs/fac/Whetstine.html).

    This internship is for WKU Biology undergraduates only.  If you are interested in this unique opportunity, complete the application below and turn it in to the Biology Department office (TCNW 201) by February 26, 2010. The stipend for the Harvard Internship is $5500 (students must use these funds for travel and room and board).  For additional information, contact Dr Rodney.king@wku.edu.

  • 2010 Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity in Canada at the University of Manitoba
    The WKU Ogden College of Science and Engineering  is pleased to offer a summer undergraduate research opportunity in Dr. Jeffery Marcus' lab at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada (http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~marcus/).  This internship is for WKU Biology undergraduates only.

    The Project: Different species of butterflies have eyespots of different sizes, shapes, and structures on their wings. The Marcus laboratory is examining three closely related species of butterflies that have different eyespot structures. They are using immunohistochemistry, molecular biology, genomics, and computational biology approaches to understand the molecular basis for these species differences.  By dissecting the mechanism responsible for these species differences, they are generating integrated models for the evolution of phenotype at multiple levels of biological organization. Student researchers who participate in this research experience will learn how to rear butterflies, do wing tissue dissections and manipulations, learn molecular biology and immunohistochemistry techniques, and learn the basics of bioinformatics and computational biology analysis.

    If you are interested in this unique opportunity, complete the application below and turn it in to the Biology Department office (TCNW 201) by February 26, 2010.  The stipend for the University of Manitoba Internship will be $4,000.  Dr. Marcus will provide travel funds and a place to stay in his home.   Please NOTE:  Students interested in the University of Manitoba internship should pay close attention to the PASSPORT requirement.  For additional information, contact Dr. Rodney King;

  • NSF sponsored Summer Research Opportunity in Investigative Biotechnology
    Western Kentucky University is pleased to announce the establishment of a National Science Foundation REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) site.  The overall theme of this summer research program is the interdisciplinary field of Investigative Biotechnology. Thirteen qualified faculty mentors from a wide range of disciplines (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science) will participate in the WKU REU program. Their research expertise spans broad areas of animal physiology, plant gene expression, microbiology, virology, biochemistry, protein structure and modeling, bioinformatics, neurophysiology and mathematical biology.  Students will work closely with the faculty mentor and interact with graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research technicians.  The WKU Office of Scholar Development will present a series of workshops on graduate school applications, fellowship applications, and grant writing.  By participating in the WKU REU program, students will gain knowledge in a variety of research areas and develop the skills needed to prepare for graduate studies.  For additional information, program requirements and to apply, please visit:  http://www.wku.edu/biotechreu.

  • Biology Summer Undergraduate Research Experience - a summer research program for WKU undergraduate students. The WKU Biology Department will provide $500 to cover research expenses for WKU Biology faculty-supervised research projects.  In addition, two $3000 awards are available for student support.  All interested students are encouraged to apply.

  • Biotechnologist Certification Program - Each semester five students will be selected to participate in an accelerated laboratory training course, learning many of the essential benchtop procedures used in biological research labs.

  • KBRIN - The purpose of KBRIN is to enhance the capacity, capability and resourcefulness of biomedical-researchers and -educators in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. KBRIN is a collaborative effort supported by 13 institutions. The activities of the KBRIN-affiliated institutions are directed towards enhancements in basic science and biomedical research, particularly in the area of genomics.
